Sliding Scale Services

Some mental health professionals adjust their normal hourly rate to help make therapy more affordable for clients who can demonstrate financial need. Open Path Psychotherapy Collective is a non-profit nationwide network of mental health professionals dedicated to providing mental health care at steeply reduced rates to individuals, couples, children, and families in need.

The Chesapeake Mental Health Collaborative in Towson offers an Affordable Counseling Program to clients under the age of 26 who lack health insurance or whose health insurance doesn’t provide adequate mental health benefits. Their sessions start at $25.

You might also consider attending a student training clinic for psychological services. Loyola University Maryland has training clinics in Baltimore and Columbia. These sites, called the Loyola Clinical Centers, offers a range of psychological services — including individual psychotherapy, group psychotherapy, couples counseling, family therapy, parenting groups, psychoeducation evaluations, neuropsychological evaluations, and social skills groups. Standard fees are set substantially lower than those provided by private practitioners. However, additional fee reduction is available to those who can demonstrate financial need with proof of income. The UMBC Psychology Training Clinic in Halethorpe would be another option. Their fees are also priced well below market rates, and clients are eligible for further reduction of fees if they bring proof of income to their intake appointment.

Pro Bono Services

Some providers offer 100% free services to a certain portion of their caseload. To locate pro bono providers, check out the Maryland Pro Bono Counseling Project — a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation founded with the goal of connecting uninsured and under-insured low-income Marylanders with compassionate and qualified mental health professionals.

Federally Qualified Health Centers

A Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) is a community-based organization that provides comprehensive primary care and preventive care — including medical, dental, and mental health/substance abuse services — to persons of all ages, regardless of their ability to pay or health insurance status. Chase Brexton is a local FQHC, with centers in Baltimore, Columbia, Easton, Glen Burnie, and Randallstown.
