We live in a world that has become very busy, too busy. To meet all of the perceived demands on us, we have been multitasking our lives away. We easily slip into an autopilot mode — unconsciously jumping from one activity to another. The meditative practices of the world remind us to take time to stop and reflect. When we do take time to pause, we are often surprised by how wonderful it is to step out of this trance.
In pausing, we also step out of the cycle of reactivity. Instead of mindlessly repeating habit patterns, pausing allows us to reflect on the options before us and choose our actions deliberately. This nonreactivity allows for true freedom.
